Your hosts and Characters of Walters Emporium

Walter
I’ve had a really varied life, first appearing in the mid 1970’s as a special guest at the St Helens Horticultural Show. I’ve always loved gardening, but over the years I have turned my hand to lots of new things and had lots of fun!

Here’s me working as a waiter in Walters Café, it was great fun. Chatting to all the ladies and hearing the local news, as well as seeing people really enjoy our great food. Someone else is doing that now as I don’t have time what with websites and all the other things I am doing.
After the spell in the Café I turned my hand to a Gift Shop – lots of nice ornaments, fragrances and books – it was really interesting, though my fingers (being gardening fingers) made it a bit difficult gift wrapping the presents!
I’ve also helped in a food shop- I was really involved in developing the jams and pickles as I really do like a fruity jam – and even had a range named after me for a while “Walters Pantry”. The trouble was I was eating so much jam and bread trying new recipes that I put on too much weight and had to move on to something new again!
I have also even had a spell as a Father Christmas – what a great time of year. Giving out gifts to children with a look of wonder in their eyes, it was such a nice thing to do. Very tiring though and some of the children were a bit old to believe I was Santa! Still Christmas is only for part of the year so I had to move on again!
This ones quite funny, as I was asked to model for an advert for a new range of Organic bread products. Well, it was one of these new fangled studios where you stand in front of a screen and do what you are supposed to do but you can’t see anything at all! Blue screen or something they told me. Anyway I was asked to point at the new logo and a sample of the bread being sliced to give it the man of the soil organic look! Well as you can see I’m laughing as I couldn’t see a thing and the director asked me to pretend I was pointing at the biggest sunflower I could imagine at the Chelsea Flower Show! (I though that was bit daft, but that’s TV folk for you…)
So there we go, a bit of a potted history I know, but gives you an idea of my varied career so far. This latest job though is brilliant. I can use all my experience in customer service, gift buying, tv advertising and others too many to mention to bring you this great website full of an eclectic mix (Chelsea gave me that expression apparently it means a varied mixture so she tells me) of products for you garden, home or your leisure, for simple purchase or as a gift.

Enough about me, now let me tell you a little bit about the rest of the Emporium team Henrietta and Chelsea.

Henrietta
Henrietta is my long suffering Sister, who over the years has developed not only into a great gardener but a lady about town too. Don’t let the wellies and hat fool you. Under the hat is a brain so sharp it can slice a lemon! Here tongue isn’t far behind either! No sorry didn’t mean it - just joking!

She has had a great career in the City, and took early retirement to work with me on the website. She has always wondered why I have moved around as much, but that’s just me and my adventurous nature – never find out if you don’t have a go will you? She left the firm Lefturn, Righton and Stop as a Senior Partner and doesn’t need to work but enjoys the variety of gardening and website development.
Henrietta has never married but has a great friend of a Scottie dog called Dundee after her favourite cake! She also likes a glass of Sherry in the evening after a busy day, but never at work! Her hobby has always been gardening and she is an expert at the herbaceous border- she can tell a Gaillardia from a Dicentra at 50 paces! Many an hour is spent tending her lovely garden and in the Summer it looks fabulous!

There’s lots more to tell about Henrietta, but we’ll leave that for another day!

Chelsea
Chelsea is my niece (really!), and is the daughter of my brother William (who is not part of the team) who lives in a very up market part of London. He asked me after Chelsea had been to University if she would be able to join us in this new project. She got a 2:1 degree in Horticulture, but didn’t want to start her own business for a while and has joined us to get some new experiences.

She has also done a years placement at Kew Gardens, so she is really well grounded in gardening. One of the other courses she took at University was marketing, so she is really helpful in that area too. As you can imagine she thinks she knows it all after the degree and the time at Kew but there is more to know about gardening and life than you can learn in a few years! In fact you never stop.
She also developed a taste for Champagne on her nights out in the bright lights of London, but now prefers a cup of Earl Grey Tea and a good book. She never works weekends though and her mobile phone is going all the time with invites to parties and girls nights in!

Well, there’s more to Chelsea too, but there’s plenty of time to get to know each other – enjoy the website and I’ll make sure our team looks after you!

Happy Shopping

Best Wishes

Walter
